How to Use Ellipses Effectively

Ellipses (…) are great for showing pauses or omissions, but overusing them can make your writing look unpolished. Let’s explore how to use them correctly.

  1. When to Use Ellipses:

    • To create a pause: I wasn’t sure … but then I agreed.

    • To show omitted text: "The beginning … was amazing."

  2. When Not to Use Ellipses:

    • For every pause or hesitation—use commas or periods instead.

  3. Practice Sentences:

    • She paused … unsure what to say.

    • The quote began, "To be … not to be."

Ellipses are a tool, not a crutch.

Use them sparingly for emphasis, and your writing will shine.

Keep practising—you’ve got this!
