Common Pitfalls in Writing Research Papers in English

Writing research papers in English can be challenging, especially for non-native speakers. Here are some common pitfalls to watch out for:

1. Weak Thesis Statement

  • A vague or unfocused thesis makes the paper unclear.

  • Ensure the thesis is specific, arguable, and reflects the main argument.

2. Poor Organisation and Structure

  • A research paper should follow a logical sequence: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion.

  • Avoid abrupt transitions between sections.

3. Inconsistent or Incorrect Citation Style

  • Not following the required citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).

  • Inconsistent formatting of in-text citations and reference lists.

4. Grammar and Syntax Errors

  • Subject-verb agreement mistakes.

  • Incorrect tense usage.

  • Run-on sentences and sentence fragments.

5. Overuse of Passive Voice

  • While passive voice is sometimes appropriate, excessive use can make writing weak and unclear.

  • Prefer active voice for stronger impact (e.g., "Researchers found that..." instead of "It was found that...").

6. Plagiarism and Lack of Proper Paraphrasing

  • Directly copying text without citation.

  • Failing to paraphrase properly while retaining the original meaning.

7. Overly Complex or Wordy Sentences

  • Avoid overly complicated sentences that hinder readability.

  • Use clear and concise language.

8. Unclear Research Objectives and Scope

  • Failing to define the problem statement clearly.

  • Trying to cover too broad a topic instead of focusing on a specific aspect.

9. Lack of Critical Analysis

  • Simply summarizing sources instead of analyzing them.

  • Not discussing the significance of findings.

10. Ignoring Feedback and Proofreading

  • Not revising based on peer or instructor feedback.

  • Skipping proofreading for typos, awkward phrasing, or inconsistencies.
